48 reviews for 5.56 16″ M4 Barrel – Mid Length

  1. 4 out of 5

    Fast shipping
    Looks good
    But no m4 contour ?
I just wanted a midlength barrel so the contour didn’t bother me

  2. 4 out of 5

Fast shipping, great price, looks good. As mentioned above does not have the M4 contour. Running a 15″ guard so I don’t care, just might want to update the description.

  3. 4 out of 5

Not a review but a guestion is it a good barale or what???

  4. 5 out of 5

We have had great success with these barrels. Accurate, reliable, well made. Thanks Anderson for making another great product!

  5. 5 out of 5

Just have a question….can this barrel be ordered with a 1-8 twist??, Starting my first ever build, I am using an Anderson complete lower, by the way, Love it!! Do not hesitate to purchase a lower from these folks!! Thanks for your time.

    • Sorry not at this time

  6. 5 out of 5

Can’t wait for this barrel to become available again!

  7. 5 out of 5

I love this budget barrel. Wish it came in a 1:8 twist. Why all the complaints about it not being an M-4 profile? Yes the description says M-4 profile but picture shows socom profile. These complainers should have called Anderson and worked out the issue before ordering. Why would anyone want an M-4 profile barrel anyway? Are these people actually going to mount a grenade launcher to their AR? Plus the weight difference is minimal. I’ve purchased lots of Anderson parts and have been completely satisfied every time. My only complaint is that this barrel has been out of stock for a long time.

  8. 5 out of 5

Just received this barrel. Quick shipping even though they said shipping may be delayed. Looks good so far, will definitely buy again for my next build.

  9. 3 out of 5

Will it work with a low profile gas block and tube?

    • Yes, use a .750 gas block and mid length gas tube

  10. 5 out of 5

Great customer service, great product at a reasonable price!

  11. 5 out of 5

Why do you idiots give it low ratings of 3 or 4 stars and you only have questions? It’s not M4 contour so it gets 4 stars? The picture clearly shows it isn’t.

  12. 5 out of 5

I agree on the rating of 3 or 4 stars, just look at the info people. You cant rate an item poorly because you couldn’t figure it out. The whole reason I ordered this barrel is because it is NOT an M4 profile. Easy to see people plus the fact its a mid gas. Nice barrel so don’t hesitate to get one.

  13. 5 out of 5

Love the price and weight of this barrel. Bought 2 after waiting for them to become available and will do it again.

  14. 5 out of 5

Excellent barrel and the price is great. I am very pleased with all the Anderson components I have bought thus far. Keep up the good work!

  15. 5 out of 5

I prefer the mid-length gas system and a 1/7 twist is perfect for a 16 inch barrel in my opinion. This is a nice barrel for the money. The head space checked out good, and yes, head space gauges should be used to check out every new barrel.

  16. 5 out of 5

I’ve had this barrel for a little while now. Haven’t put a lot of rounds through it maybe 200-300. But it’s been easy to clean and accurate. Also shot some steel case through it and the casings didn’t get hung up in the chamber so it’s also reliable.

Just had to drop a quick review on Anderson customer service. I just ordered this barrel last night and I received a confirming email this morning first thing that it had been shipped. I will update post once I receive my order but didn’t want to miss the opportunity to give positive review for positive service. Thank you

Question, what type of lining is “inside” the barrel; chromed, chromoly vanadium, Nitride, etc.?

    • We use 4150 chrome moly, no lining

My follow up from Monday. Just received today. Awesome response, shipping & delivery. All parts look great & arrived quickly. What more can you ask for. Thanks Anderson!

  23. 5 out of 5

Great service and speedy delivery, but what is the threading for the comp???

  24. 5 out of 5

Great customer service from Anderson. This barrel shoots well and is quite accurate.

Be warned: Some of the tolerances will not allow for lacquered steel case ammunition, such as in my case. I can fire brass 5.56mm without issue.

  25. 5 out of 5

Is this a 1/2-28 muzzle threaded barrel?

    • yes sir

  26. 5 out of 5

Very easy order process. Quick shipping & well packaged. Barrel fit to my upper was excellent. KAK railed gas block fit great. Barrel shot well & no problems with feeding. As good a barrel as I have used. I will definitely purchase more in the future. As a side note, I have used Anderson Lowers, BCG and LPK in previous builds and all parts have been well made and you cannot beat the quality for the price.

  27. 3 out of 5

Okay this is my experience with this barrel. I bought it because the price was right and it has a mid length gas port. I finished my build and my ar was short stroking. I did as much trouble shooting as I could but gave in and took it to a gunsmith. After much diagnosis it was determined that the gas port was too small at .073 so he opened to .078 and that’s a bingo! Now it cycles like a champ. Not sure if anyone else had experienced this but it is worth noting. So in the end it was 86.62 for the barrel and another 75 for the gunsmith. Moving forward with this knowledge I would probably buy this barrel again. By the way I was using an Anderson upper and lower for my build.

  28. 3 out of 5

Have bought two of these barrels recently. One for a customer and one for myself. Built two uppers with these barrels and having the same problem. It short strokes when it cycles. I’ve built a lot of rifles and never had this problem till now. I suspected the gas port hole was the problem but now I’m almost positive since someone else is having same issue. Should be an easy fix. Glad Anderson has a review section so issues like this can be known and people will know what to do when odd stuff like this comes up

  29. 5 out of 5

A question about the mid length gas system. I’m planning on running a 12 inch keymod for grip. I want to make sure the gas block and tube will be hidden under the foregrip. Or should I plan on either a longer front end or carbine length gas system.

    • 12″ covers the gas block

  30. 5 out of 5

I have tried this barrel and found it took some breaking in to get it to cycle 100% using 556 ammo. Like Paul above I had a hard time making it cycle. I found that by using the Anderson low profile gas block this middy barrel shoots awesome but I have to run 200 rounds through it before it runs 100%. AFTER that is reminds me why middys are worth the troubleā€¦..less recoil impulse and faster transition times between multiple targets. So worth it. Great gun barrel, highly recommended for advanced level shooters or builders. If you are a NOOB stick with the carbine gas M4 barrel, it will run right out of the gate and is a fantastic barrel too. Thank you Anderson for making such good products! You got a fan!

  31. 5 out of 5

great barrel, working on my very first ar build at for the price this is the best barrel out there, but i do have a question, is this barrel mil-spec

  32. 5 out of 5

Nice barrel for the price, recently bought 3 of these barrels when they had a discount sale on them. I regret not buying more. I have ran expensive CHF name brand barrels, and this barrel produces the sane accurate results in the field, but at a lot better price. Buy this barrel with confidence, you be pleased. Thanks Anderson for a great quality barrel and great service to match.

  33. 4 out of 5

Great Barrel and I would buy another and I probably will. I would have given it 5 stars had I not had the same issue with short stroking as Paul above. couldn’t figure out the problem, then I remembered reading Paul’s review. Sure enough, I drilled gas port out to .078 and it runs like a champ. Again a great barrel for the money.

  34. 5 out of 5

Whats the weight of this barrel? It is listed at .8 lbs in the additional details, which probably isn’t correct.

    Thanks

Just fired first time this evening. It cycled some and short stroked some using .223 federal ammo. I think I’m going to agree with the guy’s about opening up the port to .078 I’ll be performing that update tomorrow. I think if you are going to use hotter ammo or match 5.56 you would be ok as is . I give it 5 stars cause my issues are likely due to me customizing the ammo and not using the spec 5.56mm. grouping was great only have about 30 rounds out of it but I’d say it’s 1 moa or better.

  36. 5 out of 5

Before everyone goes into panic mode about “short cycling”, I would like to say a few things: first I have built on this barrel and have has one “short cycle” due to bad bolt rings in a brand new BCG. Second, the next time you ‘short cycle”, pull the gas block and look at the port. There will be flame splash around the port from the gas. That will tell you if there is a misaligned gas block / port hole interface. Drilling a larger port hole may be a fix, but is it the correct fix? All things being aligned correctly, the existing gas system will function properly as designed. -Sam Beeman, GySgt. USMC Ordnance, Ret.

    Is this barrel chrome lined?

    • No it is not

  38. 5 out of 5

Great barrel at a great price! Head space/ Go/ no Go and field gauge checked out, fit and finish was good as well. I have read people posting they didn’t get a M4 contour barrel; the picture doesn’t show a M4 contour barrel, why would you complain about that then give a low rating?????
The grouping at 100 yards was great 1/2″ MOA with a red dot, about all these old eyes can do. I did find this particular barrel had little better groups with 62 grain through 75 grain than with 55 grain; but with a 1/7 twist barrel that is to be expected. With that said, 55 grn was still accurate enough to give 1 1/2″-2″ groups. Still pretty good with a red dot at that distance. So, in conclusion, if you are looking for a budget build this is a great barrel; you could spend a lot more and not gain anything.

  39. 5 out of 5

True to my word I purchased another one of these barrels. I went ahead and opened the gas port to avoid any headaches (per my previous review) and it ran like a champ. Please not that on my previous review I had taken all the steps to eliminate any issues with any other components prior to my modification of the gas port and even had a gunsmith look at it. I would encourage others to troubleshoot it themselves and not just take my word for it. I do have another build I am working on and will purchase a 3rd barrel. This is worth every dollar and more.

I should be receiving my barrel tomorrow and I guess I should have asked this question first, does it come with everything needed for install? Barrel nut etc?

    • you would need to buy the parts to install on the upper.

  41. 5 out of 5

What’s the life span of this barrel?

    • 7-9K rounds

  42. 5 out of 5

Whats the downside of buying a non chrome lined barrel?

    • The life of the barrel

  43. 5 out of 5

question only please, will this barrel be made available with rf85? would be a great addition to rf85 parts imo, mid length and fairly light weight for a 16″.
    thank you

    • we will be adding more products to the RF85 line this year.

Good looking barrel, great price. I haven’t shot it yet but it looks good on the rifle plus I trust all the reviews say it’s a great shooting barrel. Trying it out this Sunday… Will buy again.

  45. 5 out of 5

Haven’t purchased yet just had a question, is this barrel threaded?

    • 1/2 x 28 threaded barrel

I really like the barrel nice finish very accurate but its short strocking with 223 what can i do to fix it

  48. 5 out of 5

Well I got tired of waiting on the F-85 treated barrel so I went with the standard finish. Looks great and worked perfectly for my first build. Love the 1 in 7″ twist. Works great on 68 grain boat tails…forget that 55 grain trash. I will be building several more Anderson’s.
